Want To Live Sustainably? Consider Buying A Home In An Area That Enables This Lifestyle

by Elaine Ryan

Some individuals already know where they want to buy a house because they may love a certain city or have a job that they intend on keeping until they retire. But, if you have some flexibility in this regard, you can pursue living in an area that truly reflects the most important things in your life. If you are determined to live as sustainably as you can without going off the grid, you should consider a sustainable home.

Grow Your Own Food

Although zones 11 through 13 might be the most fruitful of all places to grow food, it is not realistic to commit to buying a house and living in either Hawaii or Puerto Rico for the rest of your life. So, the next best alternative is zones 9 through 10, which you can get in either California or Florida. These areas are so great because, when you heavily invest into protecting your garden, you can grow food all year long. This will help you produce a substantial amount of food that you can use to feed your family.

Invest in Solar Power

Solar power is one thing that you should take advantage of to live a sustainable life. California is the best state for installing a solar panel system, and it meshes perfectly with the importance of growing food. This is where you will want to get specific and look for houses that have an ideal setup for south-facing panels. When installed in this direction, they will naturally receive the most amount of sunlight. A good alternative is installing them to face westward, so you should prioritize one or the other at the very least.

Prioritize Mild Weather

The mildest weather of all states is California. This means you will not have to worry about using your air conditioner or heating system that much throughout the year. Southern California is where it shines, so you may want to take this area into consideration to maximize your sustainability. The only disadvantage is that electricity costs are somewhat high at $17.66 cents per kilowatt-hour. This means you will greatly benefit from installing a solar panel system right away to minimize how much of this you have to pay.

Although you can live a sustainable life in any neighborhood, city, or state, there are some that are better than others. Buying a home in prime areas will help you achieve your goal to the fullest.
